The arable fields on the Somerset Levels are left unploughed over winter. Huge flocks of mixed corvids (crows, rooks, jackdaws) gather in the autumn and winter months to feed on the stubbles. They toss and tumble over the windswept moors and jostle into treetop roosts. Crow Country is a series of paintings, drawings and monoprints inspired by these flocks. The initial paintings speak for themselves but as the work progressed it has gradually become more process led as I’ve sought to engage with the energy and dynamism of the birds without the distraction of landscape.
