WILLOW

Drawings made in the Somerset Levels around Westonzoyland in the early Spring of 2015. The Winter Willow series were made using an ink wash technique which is a lengthy and somewhat unpredictable process. Using a robust watercolour paper as support, areas intended to remain white are masked out with a water-soluble paint such as gouache. Then ink is brushed over the whole and allowed to dry. The paper is then soaked and scrubbed so that the ink that overlays the painted area lifts off. Once dry, fine detail can be added. I used bamboo and reed pens as well as a fine drawing pen.
